Can you build a settlement between two ships?

If you want to move a ship, you have to place it so that it is attached to another ship, or to a city or settlement. You can never reach another island with just one ship. If your shipping route reaches a coastline, you can then build a new settlement on that coast, even if it’s a new island.

Ships. Seafarers introduces the concept of ships, which serve as roads over water or along the coast. Each ship costs one lumber and one wool to create (lumber for the hull and wool for the sails). A settlement must first be built before a player can switch from building roads to building ships, or vice versa.

Yes. You may build new roads or settlements anywhere that you have already built to. You do not need to be able to trace a route back to where you began the game.
